Do my iPhone photos get uploaded to be decoded?
No. A HEIC decoder is loaded into the page and runs on your device. Files must use the heic or heif extension, stay under 20 MB, and pass a signature check before decoding starts.
Why does it say the file is not a HEIC image?
The file contents are inspected, not just the name. A photo already converted to JPG by a sharing app, or a renamed file, fails that check even though the extension looks right.
