Does the countdown know what time it is now?
No. It compares two calendar dates at UTC midnight, so an event later today still reads as 0 days rather than a number of hours.
What if the target date has already gone by?
The status switches to passed and the count is shown as a positive number of days elapsed, not a negative one; the same day reads as exactly 0. Nothing is clamped, so you can point it at an old date to count elapsed days just as easily.
